Central
Coast Real Estate
In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino "discovered" the Monterey Bay and its peninsula and named the bay after the viceroy of New Spain. A presidio was built by the Mexican army in 1770. It became the capitol of Las Californias in 1776. The adobe custom house which presided over Mexico's only west coast port of entry still stands today. It was here that Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag in July of 1846 claiming for the United States the territory later to become Utah, Colorado, Arizona, California and New Mexico. This area is now a park in Monterey located in the midst of a bustling downtown lined with fashionable restaurants, shops, cafes and nightspots. Here you will find Cannery Row made famous by John Steinbeck who lived in Salinas, Fisherman's Wharf, the famous Aquarium and the oldest jazz festival in the world. Not far away is the Laguna Seca race course which is considered to be the number one road course in the world. Nearby is hang gliding and some of the most famous golf courses in the world, like Pebble Beach. Santa Cruz with its beaches and boardwalk and nearby majestic redwood trees help to round out a wonderful place to call home. In and beyond the Monterey Bay the largest marine sanctuary in the United States extends from the Farallone Islands near San Francisco south to San Simeon. The south center part of the Monterey Bay is where the Submarine Canyon, comparable in size and shape to the Grand Canyon begins, extending over 50 miles offshore, reaching depths near 12,000 feet. This canyon allows coastal upwellings of nutrient rich water from the depths of the ocean every spring. Plankton then grows abundantly which forms the basis of the food chain for all marine animals. The bay helps keep our climate very mild, averaging 57 degrees. Contact us if you are thinking of buying a home in this beautiful part of California.
